Using an approach that does not stigmatize weight\, food\, or body\, education will be provided to help reframe perceptions of a complicated relationship with food. This presentation will explore the Yale Food Addiction Scale\, biological vs chemical addictions\, and approaches to help support clients who identify with food addiction while doing no harm and “doing no shame.” \nThe 3 objectives of this presentation: \n\nVerbalize why the addiction model is not used with food.\nRespond to reports of food addiction with evidence-based information.\nIdentify next steps to working with clients who identify with food addiction.

DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nClaritycon is an annual educational conference that explores the internal and external factors that impact the emotional\, psychological and social well-being of young people. Since its creation in 2013\, the conference has grown to reach over 500 attendees ranging from educators\, therapists\, nurses\, social workers\, and mental health professionals. \n  \nEsperanza’s Executive Director\, Susan C Mengden\, PhD\, CGP\, CEDS-C\, will be presenting twice on the 18th. Her presentations are:\n11:15A – 12:10P  | A Deeper Dive: Recognizing and Treating Underserved Eating Disorder Populations: Males\, BIPOC\, and LGBTQ+\n Eating Disorders do not only occur in Cis-Gendered\, Caucasian\, higher SES\, females. However\, BIPOC\, LGBTQ+\, and males with eating disorders often go unrecognized by healthcare professionals.  This presentation will discuss current literature on the occurrence of eating disorders in these populations as well as discuss the presentation of the symptoms and behaviors so to better enable the participants to recognize and treat these underserved eating disorder populations. \nObjectives: \n\nLearn the prevalence of eating disorders in the BIPOC\, LGBTQ+ and male populations.\nBe able to recognize the presentation of the ED symptoms in the BIPOC\, LGBTQ+\, and male populations.\nLearn evidence-based modifications to eating disorder treatment for these populations\n\n  \n1:55P – 2:50P  |  The Common Co-Morbidities of Eating Disorders in Adolescents: NSSI\, Suicidal Ideation\, Substance Use\, Trauma\,  and Mood and Anxiety Disorders\nEating Disorders rarely present as stand-alone mental health conditions. This presentation will discuss the co-occurring diagnoses often seen in the adolescent with an eating disorder. Prevalence rates\, descriptions of the symptoms and behaviors\, and treatment considerations for the co-morbidities of NSSI\, SI\, SUD\, Trauma\, and Mood and Anxiety disorders will be presented. \nObjectives: \n\nLearn the prevalence of several co-occurring diagnoses with eating disorders.\nBe able to identify the common co-morbidities often seen in the adolescent with an eating disorder.\nLearn the evidence-based treatment considerations for eating disorders with the co-morbidities of NSSI\, SI\, SUD\, Trauma\, and Mood and Anxiety disorders.
