Beyond the Scale: Advancing Size-Inclusive Care in
Eating Disorder Treatment
Presented by |
Isabella “Bella” Nieto, LPC-Associate,
supervised by Elizabeth Bright, LPC-S, CEDS, and Elizabeth Oldham, LPC-S
OVERVIEW | Eating disorders affect individuals across all body sizes, yet weight stigma and size bias continue to influence assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. This presentation explores the principles of size-inclusive care and examines how weight-centered approaches can contribute to delayed diagnosis, barriers to treatment, and poorer health outcomes.
Participants will learn how to recognize and reduce weight bias, incorporate evidence-based size-inclusive practices into clinical work, and create affirming treatment environments that support recovery for clients of all body sizes.
OBJECTIVES |
Describe the impact of weight stigma and size bias on the identification, assessment, and treatment of eating disorders.
Differentiate between weight-centered and size-inclusive models of care, including the principles of Health at Every Size® (HAES) and weight-neutral treatment approaches.
Apply practical strategies to promote size-inclusive, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented care in clinical practice, including the use of inclusive language, equitable assessment practices, and bias reduction techniques.
