This presentation provides participants with the opportunity to better understand the unique needs of emerging adults defined as age-range between 18 and 25 years.

Emerging adults experience several developmental processes including maturation of the prefrontal cortex, autonomy, increased decision making, development of identity, and many environmental transitions such as academically and living-situations. Outside of baseline developmental processes, we will also discuss how these needs have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This presentation will explore how to tailor therapeutic interventions to accommodate, engage, and empower clients in this population within and outside of the treatment setting.

Objectives:

1.) Define emerging adulthood and this life stage’s distinctive developmental needs.

2.) Understanding emerging adulthood-focused eating disorder treatment and approaches.

3.) Identifying therapeutic interventions tailored to this life stage.

4.) Identifying the role of support systems outside of eating disorder treatment.
